Surma our ancestors

The surma people are Ethiopians who reside in the South western fringes of Ethiopia. They live very close to the South Sudanese border. Surma are agro-pastoralists who heavily depend their lives on the cattle. The place called Kibish very close to the area where the majority of Surma tribe resides, was the excavation place where the first modern man "Omo-Kibish" who shares everything with our modern kind - Homosapiens was found. Omo-kibish trolled in this places some 195,000 years ago. Today the Surma are the ones who live, hunt, herd their cattle and share the spirit of our ancestor Omo-kibish. The surma has so many rich cultural practices. among them the stick fighting known as DONGA is the most important combat duelling they passionately practice to this day. This short film tries to give a glimpse about the Surma and their tradition as they are a common binding bridges to the distant relative that trolled the same waters.
