EUROFER / EURACTIV event “The Future of EU Industry”

🎬 Here is my 6-minute “Monty Python” video fragment at the EUROFER / EURACTIV event “The Future of EU Industry”. Borrowing one of British humor’s finest moments ever, this video clip spells out my view on the discussion about Europe’s #criticalrawmaterals predicament: "it's action that counts, not words, and we need action now... So let's have a meeting about it".

This Life of Brian scene epitomises the crossroads situation we are confronted with in Europe. Either we wake up and get moving NOW; or we continue to talk and we lose out & face rapid #deindustrialisation. 📣 My summary statement:
"The age of free-trade neoliberalism is over. A new world order is upon us, marked by resource nationalism, protectionism, deglobalisation, with liberal democracy on the wane. In response to China’s expansionist Belt & Road Initiative and the US’ #InflationReductionAct, Europe needs to find its own answer. Our mission is clear: forge a long-term strategy, targeting made-in-Europe, vertically-integrated, de-siloed, mine-to-cleantech value chains. The #CriticalRawMaterialsAct is merely the opening gambit; now the proof of the pudding is in the eating. We need to identify a portfolio of best-in-(ESG-)class “Strategic Projects” for iron, #copper, #lithium, #rareearths and other CRM #mining, refining and #recycling, fast track their permitting and get them to deliver #ESG-friendly metals to our #cleantech factories. We need a #GreenDeal v2.0 that is infused with an Industrial Deal, in which our siloed, inconsistent legislation approach is replaced by a unified legal framework that allows our #decarbonisation strategy to go hand in hand with a cleantech-based re-industrialisation of Europe. This is a clarion call for European policymakers, citizens and ngo’s to wake up to this stark reality now. Act now or resign ourselves to becoming an industrial museum in an impoverished Europe."

The EUROFER event was attended by 250 people plus 700 on-line viewers. The speakers included the EC's EVP Maroš Šefčovič, DG CLIMA's 'boss" Kurt Vandenberghe, several industry players (Aperam's CEO Tim Di Maulo, Vestas' Wadia Fruergaard and ACEA's Sigrid de Vries, EUROFER's Axel Eggert and TATA's VP Henrik Adam) and Peter Tom Jones. Moderation by Mariam Zaidi for Euractiv.
