3.6L Pentastar Rocker Arm Replacement Trick
3.6L Pentastar Rocker Arm Replacement Trick, Easy way to release cam chain tensioner lock on bank 1 to facilitate rocker arm replacement. This engine is the 2013 3.6L Pentastar.
Each bank of the engine has its own cam chain and cam chain tensioner.
The rear bank, bank 2, has a hydraulic cam chain tensioner for its cam chain.
Bank one has a mechanical cam chain tensioner that has the locking rachet mechanism so the tensioner can only move in one direction, and that is in the direction of taking up the slack. In order to have some slack in order to lift the cam a bit you need to release the tensioner's locking mechanism.
Bank two's hydraulic cam chain tensioner slacks off when the engine is stopped, so when you're replacing the rocker arms you can loosen the caps holding the cam shaft in place and you can just lift the cam shaft a little to get the rocker arms in and out easily.
Replacing the rocker arms on bank one, is more difficult, especially on the end of the cam shafts where the cam chain is because in order to release the tensioner's locking mechanism you need to use a special tool. You can purchase the tool or you can make it from a piece of coat hanger or similar material.
When you use the tool to release the ratchet mechanism of the cam chain tensioner the tensioner can move freely in either direction and you can then lift the cam slightly in order to replace the rocker arms.
Once you stop pulling against the cam chain tensioner's lock release the locking mechanism is once again active. When you put the cam back in position the tensioner will take up the slack and the tensioner's locking mechanism will lock in place.
Special tools: You'll need a long 13mm socket to get a stud off for taking off a bracket, you'll also need a torque wrench for putting the cam shaft caps back on, and you'll need a big socket and breaker bar for turning the crank to turn the cams to get the lobes out of the way as you replace the rocker arms along the cam shaft.
