S.S. Wesley "Blessed be the God and Father" Hereford Cathedral 1980 (Massey)

A HAPPY AND BLESSED EASTER FROM THE ARCHIVE.

This is a private recording from 1980 of the choir of Hereford Cathedral directed by Roy Massey with organist Roger Judd. This anthem dates from Wesley's time as organist and choirmaster at Hereford and was written for Easter Day evensong in 1834, when only the trebles and a solitary bass (the Dean's butler) were available to sing.

What more appropriate for Easter Day than this spine-tingling performance of Wesley's masterpiece which also sums up perfectly the raison d' etre of the Archive - to preserve this great choral heritage, especially private recordings which can so easily be lost, for future generations.
