Grade 10 Level 3 | Building a Star on Earth: The Fusion Energy Challenge | HS-ESS1-1, HS-PS3-5

Why have scientists spent 70 years and billions of dollars trying to recreate what the Sun does — and why haven't they succeeded yet?

Fusion has taken 70 years because it requires simultaneously solving problems at the extremes of physics and engineering. The plasma must reach 150 million degrees — but no material can survive contact with it, so it must be suspended by magnetic fields. The magnets must be incredibly powerful — but they require supercooling to near absolute zero, just meters from the hottest material on Earth. Every fusion reaction produces energy — but also a neutron that damages the reactor walls. And ALL the energy consumed by heating, containment, cooling, and control must be exceeded by the energy produced, or the reactor is just an extremely expensive heater. The Q factor captures this: we need Q significantly greater than 1, and we only recently achieved Q greater than 1 for brief moments.

LESSON DETAILS
Grade 10 Level 3 | Modeling the Engineering Extremes of Controlled Nuclear Fusion
NGSS Standard: HS-ESS1-1, HS-PS3-5
Key Vocabulary: Plasma | Magnetic Confinement | Deuterium-Tritium Reaction | Net Energy Gain
STEM Careers: Plasma Physicists study the behavior of superheated ionized gases and design confinement systems for fusion reactors. They work at national laboratories (PPPL, LLNL, ORNL), universities, and private fusion companies like Commonwealth Fusion Systems, TAE Technologies, and Helion Energy, earning $90,000-$180,000/year. Fusion is one of the fastest-growing career fields in energy science.
