SHABBAT DINNER FAMILY RECIPES

Mommy’s Shabbat Challah

3 packages dry yeast
1 ½ cup warm water
½ cup oil
4 eggs + 1 for egg wash
2 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar
8 cups flour + extra for your hands
Mix yeast and warm water, make sure it bubbles. Mix the eggs, oil, salt and sugar one ingredient at a time until well blended. Add flour. Knead with your hands for 5-7 minutes.
Set in a bowl and cover with a towel in a warm place for 1-2 hours, then punch it down and let it rise again for another 1-2 hours. If in a rush you can skip this second rise! Braid, brush the top with egg wash (egg yolk mixed with water). Bake at 350 degrees for 25-35 minutes.

Salad Dressing Chicken
1 whole chicken cut into pieces
Salt and pepper
½ bottle of Pareve (oil based) Italian Salad dressing
Place chicken in a pyrex dish or baking sheet. Add salt and pepper then pour over salad dressing. Bake at 375 degrees for an hour.

Gram’s Matzo Balls
6 eggs
1 ½ cups matzo mela
1 tsp. Baking powder
Salt and pepper to taste
6 tablespoons soup stock
Mix together and let sit for 1 hour in refrigerator. Bring water to a boil. Form into balls with well oiled hands. Drop into boiling water and let simmer for 45 minutes.

Quick & Delicious Cupcakes
½ lb. margarine
1 cup milk
3 cups flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 ½ cups sugar
4 eggs
Cream together the margarine and sugar. Add eggs, the dry ingredients, milk and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or 15-20 minutes if you are making cupcakes.
