‘This Sovereign Isle’: A conversation with Robert Tombs | LIVE STREAM

For many observers, Britain’s decision to exit the European Union through a 2016 referendum came as a complete surprise. In his recent book, “This Sovereign Isle: Britain in and out of Europe” (Penguin, 2021), celebrated historian Robert Tombs places these recent events within the broad sweeps of centuries of British history.

By contextualizing Brexit in the larger story of British-European relations, Dr. Tombs explains Britain’s decision to leave the European Union. He illustrates that Brexit was not the result of a short-term resurgence of British exceptionalism but rather the product of Britain’s unique historical experience.
