Is Intermittent Fasting Safe When Trying to Conceive?
If you and your partner are trying to conceive, you may have heard mixed advice about intermittent fasting and fertility. Some people claim fasting improves metabolic health and hormone balance, while others warn that fasting can disrupt ovulation and make it harder to get pregnant.
So what does the research actually show?
In this video we explain the difference between intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating (TRE), and caloric restriction, and how each of these eating patterns can influence fertility in both men and women.

Many people use the term “intermittent fasting” as if it describes one specific diet. In reality, it is a broad umbrella term that includes several different eating patterns.
Time-restricted eating focuses on aligning meals with the body’s circadian rhythm and does not necessarily require reducing calories. Caloric restriction, on the other hand, involves lowering overall energy intake and can create a physiological signal that resources are limited.
These approaches affect the body in very different ways. When couples are trying to conceive, it is important to understand how energy availability, metabolism, and circadian rhythm influence reproductive hormones.
In this video we explain:
• The difference between intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating, and caloric restriction
• How circadian rhythm influences metabolism and reproductive hormones• How fasting and energy availability can affect ovulation and fertility
• Why metabolic health plays a major role in reproductive function
• When calorie restriction may help fertility and when it may interfere with ovulation
Couples trying to conceive are often given fragmented advice online. But fertility is influenced by several interconnected systems, including metabolism, hormones, circadian rhythm, and overall health.
That is why our approach looks carefully at both partners.
We are a husband and wife team of naturopathic doctors who work with a small number of couples at a time to identify what may be holding things back and create a clear plan moving forward.
If you have been trying to conceive for six months or longer without clear answers, our free masterclass explains how we approach unexplained infertility and what couples can do next.

Dr. Cindy Mai and Dr. Cody Strodtman are naturopathic doctors who work with couples experiencing unexplained infertility. Their Fertility For Two program focuses on evaluating both partners, identifying root causes, and creating a clear plan to support natural conception and improve IVF outcomes.
