Hip replacement in Ankylosing Spondylitis- can it be done Safely ?

Ankylosing Spondylitis is different from regular arthritis. It is an inflammatory condition that causes stiffness and fusion of joints, especially the spine and hips. Over time, the hip joint can become very stiff, painful, and even fused.

When this happens, total hip replacement (THR) becomes one of the most effective treatments. It helps:

Relieve severe pain
Restore movement in a stiff or fused hip
Improve posture and walking ability

However, these surgeries can be more technically demanding because of:

Stiff or fused joints
Altered anatomy
Muscle tightness and contractures

With proper planning and an experienced surgeon, outcomes are generally very good and safe.

What this really means is simple:
Even though AS is a different type of disease, hip replacement is often life-changing for these patients, helping them regain mobility and independence.
