DIY How to remove floor console quickly and safely
Tools needed:
Phillips head screw driver
10 mm socket
Ratchet
In this video, I am going to show you how to remove the floor console easily and safely with common tools to gain access to the shift cable, handbrake cable, shift lever, 12-volt power source connectors, Supplemental Restraint system (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU), Heater core and some other parts in a 2007 Toyota Corolla S.
In my case, I needed to replace the shift cable because the shift cable eye was dislodged from the shift lever. The plastic grommet that was securing the cable to the shift lever was broken into pieces, forcing the cable to fall off. So, when this happens, the Neutral Safety Switch which is located at the transmission and to which the other end of the shift cable is attached to, cuts off all power to the engine. It is a safety mechanism. It prevents the engine from starting. So, to gain access to the shift cable, I really need to remove the floor console first.
As a precaution, though, I needed to remove the negative terminal of the battery to prevent accidental deployment of the airbags. The SRS-ECU is located at the vicinity where I was working.
