RwandAir Picks Ghana As Hub For Flights To The United States

Rwanda’s national carrier has announced they will use Ghana as hub to fly to the United States starting December. The airline revealed, it has already secured authorization from the Ghanaian government to use Kotoka International Airport as the Last Point of Departure into the United States. Also, application to the US Department of Transportation for an amendment to its current US Foreign Air Carrier Permit is ongoing, and the airline plans to launch scheduled services to New York from Kigali, through Accra in Ghana.

At Accra, RwandAir will exercise fifth freedom traffic rights as provided for in the bilateral air service agreements of both US and Ghana with Rwanda. In the amendment it has filed, the airline is seeking to be allowed to either enter code sharing agreement or wet lease with “properly supervised US or foreign air carrier when Rwanda successfully achieves an IASA Category 1 rating.”

Rwanda has recognized air transport as the key enabler of its development and a vehicle to position itself to become a regional service, tourism and conference hub. To achieve economic and social development as part of its national development Vision, the landlocked country has invested heavily in its national carrier, airport infrastructure and capacity building to connect the country to markets overseas, ensure access for business professionals and investors, and create employment.
A vibrant aviation sector also facilitates tourism in the country, which is its largest foreign exchange earner and generated over 90,000 jobs, according to Rwanda Development Board. The national goal is to double tourism receipts to 1 billion dollars by 2024. The country’s airports have over the years had a consistent annual passenger traffic growth rate of 13%, indicating the need to consider the expansion of airport facilities. The Strategic Transport Master Plan includes investments into the construction the ongoing international airport and the expansion and rehabilitation of Kigali International Airport and two regional airports.
The Bugesera International Airport is the new airport currently under construction in the country. The $818 million airport is located 25km southeast of Kigali, feature a 4200m runway and will have a capacity for 1.8 million passengers per annum after completion. It will become Rwanda's largest International Airport, serving commercial flights destined to and from the greater Kigali metropolitan area, when completed.
