Investment Jargon:

Active management: An actively managed investment fund is one where a professional fund manager selects a portfolio of assets to be included. They will monitor the investments within the portfolio on a regular basis and make adjustments to take advantage of the market and/or economic conditions when and where necessary.

Asset allocation: Asset allocation is deciding what proportion of a portfolio should be made up from different investments (such as equities, bonds or funds), markets and sectors, taking into account the risk involved with each one.

Capital: The initial money invested. Cash is generally safe, but with other investments your capital will be at risk.

Equities: A holding in a company which gives the holder the entitlement to dividend payments and voting rights. Also known as shares.

Fund: Any investment vehicle in which an investment manager takes the money paid in by individuals and invests it in a wide range of assets such as equities and bonds. Unit trusts and open-ended investment companies are types of fund.

Interest: The return earned by lending money. Cash savings such as Isas pay interest to the lender, but some investments such as gilts and bonds do too.

Investment strategy: A set of rules, behaviours or procedures designed to guide an investor’s selection of a portfolio and meet their goals.

Stock market: A place where stocks and shares are bought and sold, for instance, the London Stock Exchange.

Volatility: The degree of variation of a trading price over time. If the price of a stock moves up and down rapidly over short time periods, it has high volatility. If the price almost never changes, it has low volatility.
