Gaza Residents Protest Against Hamas as Fighting Resumes

A large group of Palestinians took to the streets in northern Gaza, calling for an end to the ongoing conflict and demanding Hamas leave power, as seen in social media posts. In a rare public demonstration against the militant group, protesters were heard chanting, "Hamas, get out," while marching through a war-torn neighborhood in Beit Lahiya on Tuesday.

Northern Gaza has faced severe devastation, with many buildings reduced to rubble. Displaced residents have had to relocate multiple times due to the conflict. The footage circulating online, which Reuters verified through satellite imagery and landmarks, captured scenes of people walking down a dusty road lined with damaged structures.

In addition to the chants, some protesters held banners reading "Enough wars," while others voiced their rejection of continued violence, shouting, "We don't want war." Many Gazans who had previously fled south at the height of the fighting began returning north during a ceasefire that took effect in January.

However, renewed Israeli military operations on March 18 shattered the fragile two-month truce. The escalation followed Hamas’ release of additional hostages, part of the group of roughly 250 people abducted during its October 2023 attack, which also resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 individuals. Since the resumption of Israeli airstrikes, nearly 700 Palestinians, the majority of them women and children, have been killed, according to local health officials.

Hamas, which seized control of Gaza in 2007 after ousting the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, has maintained its grip on the enclave with little tolerance for dissent. Many residents remain cautious about openly criticizing the group due to fear of repercussions.
