Making Onion Bombs with Dad

Onions stuffed with seasoned meat and then wrapped in bacon. If you don't eat pork, you could use turkey bacon or just omit the outer wrap.

For this recipe we used the following ingredients:
Ground chuck
Mild Italian sausage
Garlic powder
Dried basil
Ground black pepper
Onion powder
Seasoned salt
Thyme
2 eggs (but in hindsight 1 was enough)
Breadcrumbs/crushed crackers
Parmesan cheese
Splash of milk
One large onion
bacon

Method:
1. In a bowl we added the ground meat, spices, bread crumbs, egg, cheese, and milk
(Note: not sure exactly how much we used. We were kind of just eyeballing everything, and you can adjust according to your taste as well as use any other spices you fancy. You could also use shredded cheese or whatever else you want)
2. Cut both ends off a large onion and remove the skin
3. Lay the onion on one of the flat sides, and make a cut halfway thru from the outer edge to the center *DO NOT CUT ALL THE WAY THROUGH*
4. Cut the core out of the onion. Make sure to go deep enough to get all the parts holding it together to avoid further breakage of your layers.
(Note: even if you break your layer, you can still use it as the outside layer of bacon will help hold things together)
5. Carefully separate each layer of the onion for filling.
6. Form meatballs the approximate size of each of your onion layers, then stuff them inside.
7. Wrap each stuffed onion with strips of bacon. Use toothpicks to hold in place.
(Note: We did the largest one first and it was a little tricky. It got easier as we went along and the onions got smaller)
8. Bake at 375 F for about an hour or so.. until your bacon is as crispy as you like it
(Note: you can also do these on the grill)
9. Once done, place on a paper towel to drain the excess grease
10. Remove the toothpicks and enjoy! 😊
