Grand Prismatic Spring & Old Faithful | Geothermal Features | Yellowstone
While Old Faithful is the most popular geyser in Yellowstone National Park, there are more than 300 geysers in the park. We meet up with Hank Heasler (a park geologist), an expert on all the hot spots in Yellowstone and the super volcano that drives them. Old Faithful is one of the biggest geysers and it erupts 130 feet into the air on average.
The Grand Prismatic Spring in the midway geyser basin is the largest hot spring in the U.S. and arguably the most awesome! The colorful rings are caused by bacteria that thrive on the rich minerals in the pool.
The Yellowstone supervolcano is very different from what you typically identify as a volcano, one with steep sides and a crater in the center of it. The Yellowstone volcano is a very different type of volcano. At 55 miles long and 20 miles wide, this supervolcano is underground. That’s more than 1100 square miles of magma - super hot liquid rock simmering beneath the earth’s surface.
The incredible heat and pressure from the supervolcano powers four different types of geothermal features in the park: Geysers, Hot Springs, Mud Pots and Steam Vents.
There’s been three massive eruptions in the past 2 million years. Another massive eruption could wipe out parts of the United States and permanently change the earth’s climate, but experts are not so worried. They believe that any eruption that were to occur would be much more localized. Bison will congregate around the spring to stay warm during the harsh winters.
