The City of Sigiriya was erected by King Kashyapa during his 18-year rule from 477 to 495 AD, according to ancient text from the famous Sri Lankan Chronicles. After assuming the throne, the legendary King chose the location for his new capital and is credited with constructing a plethora of advanced structures in the city, some of which are still surviving today. But, before settling in the city and constructing his magnificent palace, King Kashyapa had to take the kingdom from his father, which he accomplished in the most horrible way conceivable. Before Kashyapa was born, his father, King Dhatusena, ruled over the provinces of Sri Lanka after unifying the island's war-torn factions. Kashyapa was King Dhatusena's firstborn and eldest son, yet he was not the heir to the throne. The king had another son, Moggallana, who was born to the queen and was thus the lawful heir to Sri Lanka's crown. And since Kashyapa was born to a simple concubine, his only claim to the throne was to watch his half-brother reign over him, which he refused to do. Kashyapa saw an opportunity to steal his brother's kingdom and organized a coup to depose his father, who was still King at the time.
