"Saviour, if of Zion's city I, through grace, a member am..."

Psalm 87 celebrates Zion, the city built by God.
In ancient Israel, they saw the city of David, Jerusalem, and got a sweet taste of what it means when God dwells with His people, to lead them, protect them, and feed them. It was a privilege to be born there - an unmerited gift of grace.

This same blessing had been felt by God's people in the past, even when their tribe wandered in the desert- His presence went with them, and all their needs were met.

God gave them anointed leaders in Moses and David - and they were great men indeed. But the bible's history records the failure of Moses and the rebellion of the Israelites. It records the great moral failures even of "great David", and the slow crumbling of his kingdom over the following centuries.

And yet the bible speaks of another Zion, not like the geographical place on earth any more, but an ultimate city. It speaks of a greater leader, a perfect king who would call His children to be with Him in that great place, when the time of His kingdom arrived.

We may be downcast as we see the sin and brokenness of our world. Daily we witness angry factions rise against one another, seeking an enemy to destroy. We want to establish our own utopia where our longings are satisfied, but we lack the tools, the wisdom, the integrity and the strength to ever achieve it. We mourn and yell for justice and we long for grace. We are ill-trained to handle either. A place may be perfect, but introduce fallen people there, and we will eventually turn that Eden into hell.

Those who have been called by Christ are shown a different picture; one which gives them peace in the face of chaos. It lets them meet senseless destruction with obedient resolve. It is a picture of a sure hope - the city that our hearts long for has already been built for us, and our citizenship has been bought for us by the blood of Jesus Christ. No unholy thing may enter there to defile it, to pollute its streams. Therefore if we are to ever come to it, we must come humbly, by the grace of God alone - only if He endows us with His perfect holiness will we ever be fit to live in such a glorious place.

And yet, that is what we are promised. A hope offered to all who would submit themselves and take hold of the free gift. The idea is so much foolishness to the people in the world around us. But we know the God who has called us, and we have seen His good and mighty works. We have met the Son who saves us, and we know that He died for our many sins, and was raised for our justification. We have experienced the transformation of the Holy Spirit living within us, and we know that we can trust His promises to continue this good work to completion. And though it tarry, yet we shall wait for it. This is our hope.

"Solid joys, and lasting treasure - none but Zion's children know."
