Why did ancient civilizations hang their coffins on towering cliffs?

Across Asia, from the misty mountains of Sagada in the Philippines to the dramatic cliffs of Tana Toraja in Indonesia, hundreds of ancient coffins still cling to vertical rock walls. Some of them are believed to be over 1,000 years old.

For the Igorot people of the Philippines and the Bo people of China, placing coffins high above the ground meant bringing the soul closer to heaven while protecting the dead from floods and wild animals.

In Indonesia’s Tana Toraja, the tradition evolved into something even more remarkable. Coffins called Erong are placed on cliff faces and guarded by lifelike wooden statues known as Tau-tau, carved to resemble the deceased.

Without modern equipment, communities used ropes, bamboo scaffolding, and collective effort to lift these heavy coffins onto impossible cliffs.

Today, many of these ancient coffins are slowly returning to the earth, leaving behind one of the most mysterious and haunting burial traditions in the world.

Would you dare visit these silent cliffside graves?
