Repairing Slabs: Concrete Penetrating Sealer Densifier for Weak, Dusting Floors
We've been receiving many inquiries about repairing concrete floors that are either dusting, scaling, or downright weak:
"My garage is dusting. Where are these dusts coming from?"
"What's the solution for my dusting/cracking floor?"
"Do I need to remove my floor if it's experiencing severe dusting?"
There are many reasons why concrete floors are damaged. They suffer from dusting, concrete scaling, or delamination of the top surface. First and foremost, the floor could be too weak to support the load or traffic in the area, which leads to wear and tear of the concrete floor surface. Other reasons include: poor mix designs, error during placing, overworking the concrete, using too much water, and chemical spillage.
When repairing concrete floors that are weak and dusting, you have to consider many factors to ensure the success of the project.
First, you have to make sure that the floor is still in good condition. It should be free from concrete delamination, dusting, void under it, or scaling. Repairing unsound concrete floors will just lead to the delamination of the topping because of adhesion issues caused by the dusting or poor strength of the concrete surface.
For this, you can consider two possible solutions to repair your dusting concrete floor. You can either use Hardcrete D (Dustproofer) or Hardcrete PE (Penetrating Epoxy)
1. Hardcrete PE is a two-component epoxy coating specially formulated for sealing WEAK concrete floors that suffer SEVERE DUSTING. The low-viscous epoxy penetrates the concrete floor and binds the concrete surface to create a durable, abrasion-resistant barrier.
2. HARDCRETE DP is a single pack, sodium silicate-based, dustproofer and hardener for concrete floors. When applied on concrete, it reacts chemically with the free lime and calcium to form Calcium Silicate Hydrate (CSH) within the pores, producing a hard, dust-free finish. It is recommended for concrete floors that suffer from LIGHT DUSTING.
Another factor your should consider when repairing dusting floor is the strength of the concrete floor. You can either use a rebound hammer or ask your engineer to assess if the concrete floor can support the load requirements of the area.
Now, if you find out that the floor doesn't meet the required compressive strength needed for the area, you can use Hardcrete PE to improve the strength of the floor first before applying skim coat for floors to have your desired smooth finish.
