The Built Environment and Healthy Communities
This video, produced by the Institute for Public Administration at the University of Delaware, describes how land use planning, and concern for the built environment, originated from a public health focus. Four factors have contributed to rising rates of obesity and sedentary lifestyles in America: 1) the built environment and community design issues, 2) inefficient land use patterns, 3) poor behavioral choices, and 4) lack of access to healthy food.
Built environment issues can be addressed by carefully choosing where we build and how we build. An interdisciplinary approach and public involvement is needed to foster plans, policies, and community design that support healthy and complete communities.
