In this Rough Guide (with no voice) you can follow along to make smoke with no third party plugins inside after effects using CC Particle World.

Assumes a basic knowledge of After Effects.

You will make a custom particle, use that with CC Particle World and use a high frame rate comp to produce a slowly expanding misty, whispy smoke.
