SpaceX plans to send a prototype model of the Starship on its first orbital flight in the coming months, an important step toward those flights to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
To achieve said goal, two months ago, crews at the facility began working on the first true Super Heavy prototype, the launch stage of SpaceX’s Starship. After six weeks of assembly, SpaceX rolled the Super Heavy Booster 3 (B3) out of the High Bay and installed it onto the launch pad.
However, Elon Musk confirmed that the B3 prototype will be used for ground tests and SpaceX will be making the first flight test with Booster 4 and ship 20. At the time, it was seen as a very surprising announcement to everyone.
So how is the current construction situation of B4?
B4 is being stacked in High Bay. Almost every part of B4 is already prepared, just waiting to be assembled. And aft sections 4 and 5 were waiting outside the High Bay to be stacked in the next few days.
What design will B4 look like?
Previously, Elon Musk said that the B3 was “very hard to build.” The assembly process consisted of stacking and welding 36 steel rings with three tank domes and dozens of other major components. Luckily, the ground crews have developed considerable expertise since the booster element is built out of many of the same parts as the Starship and the assembly process relied heavily on the same production apparatus.
The orbiting prototype will certainly be calibrated by SpaceX and requires even more complex designs than B3.
As planned, once stacking is complete, B4 will be 230 feet tall, roughly the size of the Statue of Liberty, and approximately 30 feet in diameter.

The company had originally hoped to make an orbital flight with both Starship and a Super Heavy booster in July. However, according to a tweet from Elon, it seems SpaceX will be happy if both Starship and Super Heavy are stacked by the end of the month, which seems to be a much more realistic expectation.
Before a full-duration flight test can take place, the company’s orbital launch tower will need to be completed. Currently, the pad seems to be well on its way up, as the section 8th of the behemoth launch tower has reached the top of it .
So B4's orbital flight will be done in August at the earliest.
