Trump Considers Executive Order on College Athletics NIL Deals After Meeting with Nick Saban

President Donald Trump is contemplating an executive order to enhance scrutiny of name, image, and likeness deals in college athletics, following discussions with former Alabama football coach Nick Saban. According to the Wall Street Journal, Saban, who has been critical of the current NIL landscape, suggested reforms rather than outright elimination of these deals. Trump made his remarks during a visit to Tuscaloosa, where he delivered the university's commencement address.

While an executive order could set the stage for changes, NCAA president Charlie Baker indicated that congressional action might still be necessary. This development comes after a significant legal battle known as House v. NCAA, which remains unresolved as Judge Claudia Wilken has raised concerns about the proposed settlement, particularly regarding roster limits.

Additionally, Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville, a former college football coach himself, has engaged with the Trump administration on NIL issues. Tuberville emphasized the importance of college football, stating, "It's the heart and soul of America — but it's in danger if we don't level the playing field," highlighting the urgency of addressing the current challenges within college athletics.
