The Hardanger Fiddle

Learn all about the beautiful Norwegian fiddle - known as a Hardanger, in this performance/demonstration by fiddle player and violinist Alison Wallace of Moorhead, MN.

Alison Wallace began the violin as a child, attended St. Olaf College with a major in biology, and currently performs with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra and an old-time band called the “Knotty Pine Pickers'' when she is not teaching biology or studying prairie ecosystems. Alison discovered Hardanger fiddle in 2013 while attending the Scandinavian Festival at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, Minnesota, and was compelled to commission a fiddle that very same day from the maker/performer, Bud Larsen. She attends the yearly Hardanger Fiddle Association of America workshops and has learned techniques, traditions, and tunes from several Norwegian and American Hardanger fiddle teachers, and has even had the chance to travel to Norway to learn more about the different regions that Hardanger fiddle tunes are from. She currently studies with Vidar Skrede, a recent immigrant from Norway and performer/teacher/composer based in Milwaukee. In 2016 she co-founded the Fargo Spelemannslag, (https://youtu.be/YbA-zm7vtvg) which now has about a dozen members ranging in ages from 13-80.
