• The best way to start communicating with coaches is through an introductory email.
• Here are a few tips to consider when creating your subject line for emailing college coaches:

1. Think about what would be important to the coach
2. Keep your subject line to 50 characters or less
3. Use numbers and stats in your subject line

• What to email college coach: Your general information (Name, graduation year, high school and club name), GPA, test scores, sports specific stats and relevant measurables, contact information (phone number and email, as well as the contact information for your coaches).

• Whatever you do, avoid sending mass, generic emails out to all the coaches you want to contact when emailing college coaches.

• Athletes can reach out to coaches at any time! Try sending your email between 4-8 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday. Our data show that this is the best time to send an email to college coaches. Don’t send your email until you’ve run spell check and re-read for any errors.

• For most sports in the NCAA, coaches can start contacting recruits starting either June 15 after their sophomore year of high school or September 1 of their junior year. However, college coaches are allowed to read recruits’ emails and follow them on social media to track their athletic progress.

• A personal email sent from a college coach is a very good indicator there is genuine interest in recruiting you. When any coach reaches out, you should reply promptly and honestly—even if it’s a polite decline. Answer questions with a personal (not generic or templated) response.

• If the coach has provided their phone number in their email or has indicated they would like you to call them, your best course of action is to pick up the phone.
