Medical Animation: Norwood Operation
Norwood Operation with BT shunt OR Sano shunt: Patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) will commonly undergo the Norwood operation in the first few weeks after birth. This procedure, as shown in the animation, takes the one good ventricle, the right ventricle, and changes the plumbing so it now pumps blood to the body, rather than to the lungs. To make sure the lungs also get blood flow, a new connection, either a tube from the aorta to the pulmonary artery (the Blalock-Taussig or BT shunt) or a tube directly from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery is added (Sano shunt). This is the first of typically 3 surgeries children will undergo after diagnosis with HLHS.
With our unique Digital MediaLab team at Cincinnati Children’s, now complex surgeries can be easily visualized using the splendor of digital animation (https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/research/divisions/c/critical/MediaLab). The animations were created in collaboration with The Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s (https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/service/h/heart-institute), a top-ranked cardiology and heart surgery program that not only aims to be a leader in patient care, but also in patient-family experience and innovative education!
