Tesla Giga Berlin Permitted to Install Aggregates and Starts Night Shift

Big things are happening at Tesla Giga Berlin: Tesla gets a permit for the further construction of the 'Painting,' which means Tesla is allowed to install the aggregates from the Geico Taikisha, which is the first company in the world to offer a paint line with no impact on the environment.

Tesla also adds a night shift to accelerate Giga Berin Construction.

Thus, Tesla has received another early approval for the construction of its factory in Grünheide near Berlin in Brandenburg. The State Office for the Environment has approved that Tesla may install the paint shop in the planned vehicle plant. However, this happens at your own risk, as the ministry announced on Wednesday. The permit for an early start of construction takes place in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act.

Here is what the statement by the Brandenburg Environmental Office says.

In its most recent decision, the State Office for the Environment allowed Tesla to install the paint shop in the planned vehicle plant. This is done on the basis of an early start approval in accordance with Section 8a of the Federal Immission Control Act and is carried out at the developer’s own risk. The paint shop should primarily use water and solvents sparingly.

The examination of the application submitted at the end of August was extensive and detailed because it concerns the operating unit in the water protection area, in which chemicals are handled. Therefore, all containers must either be double-walled or set up in a sufficiently large collection area.

The construction of the plant takes place in the existing structures. Since no new areas are used, no further requirements for nature conservation are required. Due to the current pandemic situation, an exception to the night work ban is permitted so that the work can be carried out in compliance with the distance and hygiene requirements. This had to be taken into account when determining the requirements for noise protection.

But Tesla is facing some lawsuits against Giga Berlin's new plans.

These plans have been met with pushback from two Brandenburg environmental associations, the Green League and the Nature Conservation Union. Michael Ganschow, managing director of the Green League, noted that “It all boils down to trying to legally prevent the clearing” of the area.

Ganschow highlighted that it’s not understandable why trees are already being felled for a planned sewer pipe whose permit has not even been applied for yet. Berlin environmental lawyer Thorsten Deppner, who represents both organizations, also requested evidence and documentation that protected animal species were relocated before the trees in the area were felled.

“My clients fear the occurrence of sand lizards and smooth snakes in hibernation in the root area of trees. I will have to recommend my clients to stop the felling… to protect these animals by means of temporary legal protection,” he said.
