The Importance of Social Support: Why Injury Makes Us Feel Lost | Aditya Jairam | TEDxUoN
NOTE FROM TED: While some may find this helpful as a complementary approach, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and interpretation of injury recovery, physiology, and related interventions. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf
When athletes get hurt, the first question often isn't 'when can I play again?' Rather, 'will they replace me?' In this gripping talk, Aditya explores what really breaks during injury and how staying connected through movement shapes resilience and longevity. Aditya Jairam is a physiotherapist and postgraduate student in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Nottingham. His interests lie in athlete longevity, injury recovery, and the systems that enable human performance to endure.
Having worked with athletes across clinical and sporting environments, Aditya noticed a pattern that traditional performance models often overlook: injuries don’t just disrupt the body; they unsettle rhythm, identity, and an athlete’s connection to their craft. He further explores how biomechanics, load management, and recovery intersect with something less measurable but equally vital- the relationship athletes maintain with movement itself.
In his TEDx talk, he asks a simple question: what if longevity isn’t about getting stronger, but staying connected? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
