CNC Spoons \ Two Sided Milling Jig Easy 🥄

We start with a powerful CNC router (X-Carve), mix in a little creativity, a dash of spare parts, a light dusting of CAD work and bam! We are carving wooden spoons like mad!

It's a common method when machining two-sided parts to use alignment pins. I wanted a jig that would make the process faster by creating a jig/ vise to eliminate the need to run an extra tool path to machine the holes, maintain accuracy after flipping and securely hold the piece for milling. The really tricky part was doing this without hindering the capabilities of my machine for other operations and I managed to pull it off!

To sum it up if you couldn't follow the video, a long piece of makerslide is attached to the frame of the X-Carve and sits below the surface of wasteboard. There are two identical runners that attach to the top of the makerslide rail with a bolt and t nut. Each runner is made up of a short piece of makerslide with a hole drilled all the way through it for mount purposes, a plastic block that is mounted to the end with self-tapping screws and a 1/4" steel pin that is tapped into the exact center of the plastic block.

A wooden blank is predrilled with 1/4" holes on both sides, is placed over the pins on the runner and then the runner is tightened down. A clamp is inserted into the maker slide from each end and firmly holds the wooden blank in place while the first side is being machined. After the first machining operation is complete, the clamps are released, the blank is flipped accordingly and clamped firmly once again.

It's infinitely adjustable and can be used for everything from spoons to action figures. Anything that requires two-sided machining operations. I also calculated the cost to build this using parts bought from Inventables.com and it's less than $60 so I think that's the cheapest, most capable jig of it's kind (or at least of the jigs I can find...)

The clamps bolts and the 1/4" pins were made out of time constraints, but these are available commercially for very little cost.

I designed the spoons in Fusion 360 and also set up my CAM files. CAM is a list of things to do for the CNC. To sent the CAM I used Easel, which is a beautiful web-based application that can connect to your X-Carve and guide you through the process to make sure you get the results you're after. The best thing about this last paragraph? All the software I listed is free!
