Removing post surgery drains and aftercare for wounds
After surgery, blood and bodily fluids may collect at the surgical sites. Your surgeon may insert a flexible tube to drain fluids into an external bulb that can be emptied to help avoid any buildup of fluid collection. This patient is 8 days post-op from a double incision FTM Top Surgery and will be removing the post surgical drains.
How to remove the drains:
Step 1: Release the suction by unscrewing the cover.
Step 2: If there is a drain dressing gently pull it back without tearing the skin.
Step 3: Using a pair of fine scissors, pull back on the drain slightly to see the stitch and cut underneath to release the stitch.
Step 4: Pull drain straight out. (Pressure and a pulling sensation is normal)
It is normal for a small amount of blood clot to come out once the drain is removed. There can be a little piece of stitch left which can be removed once the drain is out. In about 24-48 hours, the incision for the drain will close up.
Wound care after the drains are removed:
Step one: Apply a small amount of triple antibiotic or Neosporin to a gloved hand. (Only a small amount is needed as shown in the video).
Step 2: Apply a light coat over free nipple graft and using the reminder, apply to the wound itself along the incision line.
Step 3: Put a folded gauze over where the drain was removed using the compression garment to hold it in place.
Step 4: Open a piece of gauze and place is over everything else.
Be very careful when removing the gauze to shower or change to make sure it does not pull on the wound or lift off the nipple grafts. The gauze can be wet to help make it come off easier if it is difficult to remove. These steps should be done 2-4 times a day. Make sure to only apply a shiny coat over the wounds and not apply too much.
