Retro Release: 40 years ago today—on June 21, 1985—Mötley Crüe released Theatre of Pain, their third studio album produced by Tom Werman and recorded at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver.

Blending raw glam-metal riffs with swaggering anthemic choruses and power-ballad moments, Theatre of Pain alternates between the gritty cover “Smokin’ in the Boys Room,” the emotive “Home Sweet Home,” and the driving rocker “Save Our Souls.”

It peaked at No. 6 on the US Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA, solidifying Mötley Crüe’s status as one of the era’s defining hard-rock acts.
