Los Alamos, New Mexico

Discovering a large exhibit on Los Alamos at the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe with a warning to take no photos had us intrigued enough to make the climb to "The Hill," as those in Santa Fe knew it, to learn more about the Manhattan Project. It was a surprise to discover Fuller Lodge as the site chosen for this secret WWII scientific complex, as the lodge had served up to that point as the central feature of a Boy Scout-based prep school largely serving the sons of wealthy families from the East. The National Park Service visitor center is quite small, so to learn about the breadth of how Los Alamos changed the world, it's crucial to visit the museum behind Fuller Lodge and take the self-guided walking tour. While little remains of the wartime buildings, there are plenty of memorials, as well as exhibits in the Hans Bethe House that leave intriguing questions to be answered. Of course, we found trails, too: it turns out there are many atop this mesa.
