Living with Cemeteries
Title: Living with Cemeteries - The Hakka Cemetery Special
In this documentary, we take a look at the brief history of the very last standing Hakka Cemetery, better known as Shuang Long Shan (Double Dragon Hill) to some, in Singapore; before moving on to the greater issue that looms around the fate of this cemetery. We are interested to find out more about how this piece of culturally rich land could continue to coexist in contemporary Singapore amidst the residential area as well as places of nightlife without giving way to new buildings or commercial plans. It was a fruitful undertaking in speaking with the ex-secretary of the Hakka Association as well as residents and business owners around the area with regards to their thoughts and hopes for this Hakka cemetery. This documentary explores the possible fate of this cemetery through the eyes and voices of four ‘not-very-experienced-in-film’ students but determined to create a meaningful conversation about the preservation of such last remaining culturally rich lands in the fast-paced, ever moving Singapore.
This documentary film is made by History students of Nanyang Technological University (Singapore): Wong Yuebin, Tan Yitorng, Marcus Teo and Clara Yanfang Lim, as part of the course work for the module ‘HH4014 A Global History of Death (Instructor: Dr Song-Chuan Chen)’. If there is any copyright infringement, kindly email scchen@ntu.edu.sg, we will take the film down.
The team would like to thank Mr Loh, ex-secretary of the Hakka Association, Mr Eric Ang from Avil Motors Pte Ltd as well as the residents from the Commonwealth area for their time and help with the interviews. Special thanks to Karl von Moller, Kygo, Philip Adam, Chris Portal and Nuralisah Mohd Ali for allowing us to use their fantastic video footages and music.
