Balos Beach Paradise, Adventures In Crete Greece! Europe's Best Beaches Near Kissamos And Chania!

Just days after Greece opened its borders to tourists following a long pandemic lockdown, VFC booked a ticket to the paradise island of Crete and was off on an amazing vacation adventure. First stop was the heavenly Balos Beach near Kissamos and Chania.

Balos Beach was voted one of Europe's best beaches and after enjoying an amazing adventure to the Balos Lagoons, it's obvious to see why. We start our adventure in Chania, Crete and drive the rental car over and past some beautiful mountains on the road to Kissamos. Jusy beyond Kissamos, a turn-off takes us through a couple of small villages and them up the mountain road that will drop us off at the car park for the beautiful Balos Beach.

The road is not as treacherous as many of the online reviews describe, but it is an unpaved and quite narrow and winding mountain road which could be a bit scary for the unvitiated. VFC's patience is tested at multiple points during that drive up, but you'll see once everyone is parked and we are on this beautiful beach, my temperament calms and forgiveness for driving like slugs is offered. Until we get back in the car for the drive out, lol.

For those unable to handle the mountain roads, there are boats and ferries that will shuttle you over from Kissamos. Not a bad deal.

Once parked, the hike down to the Balos lagoons is simply amazing. The first views of the beach offer the best photo ops of the day and when you search Balos Beach on the internet or Instagram, it is from this first viewing point where most of the shots are taken. Simply breathtaking.

The hike down is not that bad, not too steep and it is worth the experience once you land on the beach. Of course, VFC's first stop is at the cash only Canteen where I stock up on some local Cretan wine and head over to score a beach chair - 7 euro for a chair, 10 if you want an umbrella with it.

We relax in the sun, take a few swims in the splendid water of the different lagoons and VFC babbles out some thoughts while strolling around this fantastic beach.

The wine flows smoothly as I eyeball the hike back up over the mountain that I'll have to do pretty soon.

On the way out we stop at Agarathos Restaurant in the small village of Kaliviani, Crete - just outside of Balos. This is my first full meal on what would be the vacation of a lifetime for me and I enjoyed some Dakos, grilled Feta, and Cretan meatballs to go with some fantastic wine, a Greek coffee and - as is customary on Crete - some dessert and Raki on the house to top of the meal.

Had a nice chat with the staff and then headed on my way back to Chania to rest up (after some more village wine that night) for the next day's adventure, which would take me to the beautiful Vai Beach all the way on the other side of Crete.
