The 85th 24 Hours of Le Mans (French: 85e 24 Heures du Mans) was an automobile endurance event at the Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France. It was the 85th running of the 24 hour race organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest as well as the third round of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship.

Kamui Kobayashi claimed pole position for Toyota by breaking the overall timed lap record for the current iteration of the Circuit de la Sarthe as well as the fastest average lap speed in the history of Le Mans. After securing pole position at Le Mans the previous two years, returning race winner started the race third. The race was won by the No. 2 Porsche driven by Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber who completed 367 laps over the 24 hours. The race was marked by many mechanical issues in the LMP1 class. Only the No. 2 Porsche and No. 8 Toyota completed the race and both required lengthy repairs. Due to this, the No. 2 Porsche only retook the overall lead from the No. 38 LMP2 car with less than 2 hours to run. The only other LMP1 finisher, the No. 8 Toyota, finished 9th overall.

The LMP2 class was won by the No. 38 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca 07 driven by Ho-Pin Tung, Thomas Laurent and Oliver Jarvis. They set a new Le Mans first as they were the only LMP2 car in history to hold the overall race lead at some point in the race. The LMGTE Pro class was won by the No. 97 Aston Martin driven by Darren Turner, Jonathan Adam and Daniel Sierra. The car took the lead on the final lap after a puncture for the No. 63 Corvette. Finally, the No. 84 JMW Motorsport Ferrari 488 GTE took victory in the LMGTE Am class. The car was driven by Robert smith, Will Stevens and Dries Vanthoor.

Fritz Enzinger, Vice President LMP1: “One of our ambitious targets for the LMP 2017 season was to achieve a hat-trick at Le Mans. But what we have gone through over the past 24 hours, you could not imagine in your wildest dreams”
Andreas Seidl, Porsche Le Mans 2017 Team Principal: “It’s hard to find words for what happened. The drivers and the entire team have done an amazing job. We can put two tough weeks behind us that provided some highs and lows but we fought with typical Porsche spirit. It will take some time for what we have achieved today to sink in. We’ve now won Le Mans three times in a row which is just sensational. The team worked relentlessly for this over the past twelve months. Toyota was a very strong competitor. They pushed us to the limits and beyond and we both paid the price. It is a sad that Neel Jani, André Lotterer and Nick Tandy retired from the race because they controlled it for a long time. But Earl Bamber, Brendon Hartley and especially Timo Bernhard de- served to take the race win. Timo was the development driver right from the begin- ning of the programme. After the long repairs, the three of them kept fighting and were ultimately rewarded.”

Without their hard work we wouldn’t have got back racing again so this win is down to them.”
Timo Bernhard Le Mans 2017 Winner (36, Germany): “It feels surreal. When I joined Porsche as a junior driver back in 1999, I carefully developed the dream to perhaps one day get the chance to fight for overall victory at Le Mans. I hoped I would be good enough to re- ally do this one day. Now, 18 years later, we have achieved it together. The final lap was very emotional for me. It will take some time before I realize what has hap- pened.”
Brendon Hartley Le Mans 2017 Winner (27, New Zealand): "Le Mans is one crazy race. The mechanics worked incredibly hard on Saturday evening to get our car repaired in super fast time and since that moment Timo, Earl and myself, together with our engineers, have been pushing hard, 100% every second, and desperately hoped that our efforts would somehow pay off.”
