Freight Broker Sued in Fatal Crash: A Post-SCOTUS Test Case 🚛

A new wrongful-death lawsuit filed in St. Lucie County, Florida, is testing the reach of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II.

The estate of a victim killed in a 2025 Florida Turnpike crash is suing freight brokerage giant C.H. Robinson, arguing that the company failed to exercise reasonable care in carrier selection. This comes just weeks after the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that federal law does not automatically shield freight brokers from state-level negligent-hiring claims.

C.H. Robinson has denied any involvement, stating the carrier involved was not active in their network and that they have no record of brokering the shipment in question.
