Speed Up Your Sluggish Thinkorswim Platform

Does your TD Ameritrade Thinkorswim platform seem more sluggish than normal? Are charts taking forever to load?

If so, there are several basic ways to free up resources for the TOS platform, at the system level. First of all:
- First, make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements: https://www.thinkorswim.com/t/index.html#!/system-requirements
- Avoid running other applications simultaneously
- Use fewer monitors, and reduce the resolution of the ones you have
- Turn off extra features of the Windows or Mac operating system to spare resources for the Think or Swim platform

I've noticed certain applications conflict with TOS. I had trouble with Sophos Antivirus for Mac for a long time, for instance, and users in forums have mentioned many other apps. So be sure to test turning some of those off and seeing if it helps.

Beyond that, here are several ideas of how to improve the performance of your Think-or-swim platform itself.

1. Collect Garbage in Help / System. This is done periodically by the platform but you can do it manually to help things along if they get bogged down.

2. Adjust quote speed downward if you're a longer term trader who doesn't need to see every tick (this is the opposite of what they normally tell you). NOTE: This tip may just help your trading psychology in the meantime too.

3. Increase the max memory allotted to the platform. Guidelines courtesy of Nuke:
- If you have 4GB of RAM, set the min/max to 512/1536
- If you have 8GB of RAM, set the min/max to 1024/3072
- If you have 16-32GB of RAM, set the min/max to 4096/6144

4. Delete the usergui folder from:
- Program Files / Thinkorswim / usergui (WINDOWS)
- Applications / Thinkorswim / usergui (MAC)

5. Edit vmoptions file in the same location (Program Files / Thinkorswim / thinkorswim.vmoptions or Applications / Thinkorswim / thinkorswim.vmoptions) and overwrite it to add this chunk of code:

-Xmx2048m
-Xms1024m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m
-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=false
-Djava.util.Arrays.useLegacyMergeSort=true
-Classpath/p launcher-first.jar
-Djava.net.preferIPv4stack=true
-Dsun.java2d.xrender=True
-XX:-UseConcMarkSweepGC
-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
-Dsun.awt.disableMixing=true

6. The very last resort option is to make a backup, then delete the original, and completely reinstall the platform.
