🍟 ON TODAY'S MENU: Have you ever wondered if your A500 could go online via modern broadband or Wi-Fi and be your main email mailbox machine? I have. There are many challenges, not least connecting to broadband/cable internet on a device designed only to dial up, and modern encryption on an 80s device. Can it be done?!… By Wi-Fi!?...
🕹 I have tested this without the accelerator and extra RAM. Try it! The accelerator doesn’t ‘enable’ anything, it only affects the speed and image, neither of which enable email. I use the HDMI hi-res because it doesn't flicker like the lo-res. Plain text email doesn't eat RAM either way.
🕹️ An unaccelerated 512KB machine behaves as shown, just slower which makes for a lonnng video. (E.g. that image takes about 5 minutes to load, but load it does!) The thing that potentially gives the A500 the internet ability is the magical combination of Plipbox s/w, AVR-NET-IO, & the Network Boot Disk configurator, not the Vampire card.
🕹 I hope you enjoy this little journey as much as I did, although it took actually weeks of research and troubleshooting to find the perfect combination of network disk, TCP/IP software, ISP, and email program that could all work on an A500. Research rules! The Plipbox software/docs also needed some correcting which I worked with the developer to implement on his site. This is the result.
🕹 Also, although I have an A500 “Plus” case, the machine is actually an original A500 inside. Because I upgraded the chip RAM to a whopping 1MB (!), I fancied a suitable case upgrade to match. This was something I did when I was 17.
