Walking in #Rome: a walk in Via #Labicana from Colosseum

Via Labicana was one of the oldest Roman roads. Today the ancient road is remembered in Rome by the urban road via Labicana between viale Manzoni and the Colosseum.

It started from the Roman Forum, in the suburra it separated from the Via Salaria and went up with Via in Selci sull'Esquilino, to go down towards Porta Esquilina. The modern urban road via Labicana instead passes south of the Esquiline.

Via Labicana met the church of Santa Lucia in Selci on the Esquiline, and emerged from the Servian walls through the Esquiline Gate decorated with the arch of Gallienus. At the third mile there was the ancient necropolis Ad duas lauros with the underground basilica of Elena and her mausoleum called Tor Pignatta from which the name of the Roman village of Torpignattara derives, and the Catacombs of Saints Marcellino and Pietro.

A statue of Augustus Pope Maximus was found in the villa of Livia along the Via Labicana. Today this statue is in the National Roman Museum, generally referred to as Augustus of via Labicana.
