Petrus Van Schendel

Petrus van Schendel was born in Terheyden, North Brabant on 21 April 1806, and settled in Brussels in 1845, staying there until 1870.Schendel was a painter of historical and genre scenes. He was a pupil at the Antwerp Academy between 1822 and 1828, studying under Van Bree. He first settled in Amsterdam and then went to Rotterdam, where he made his reputation as a portrait painter. He later moved to The Hague and in 1845 to Brussels where he became famous for his market scenes with light effects. Schendel also travelled throughout Europe. He won medals in Amsterdam and Brussels in 1845 and in Paris in 1844, and 1847.Schendel’s works include “Market in Friesland by Moonlight”, “St Jerome” and “Kitchen Scene” 1834. “Evening Market in Antwerp”, “Fish Seller” 1843, “Vegetable Market” 1852, “Return From The Hunt” 1839.Works by the artist can be found in the Museums of Amsterdam, The Hague, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, and Stuttgart.
