🧐👉 320K GPUs, 112 Megawatts, Zero AI—Cornell Study Blows Up Pearl’s Big Promise #QixNewsCrypto

📰 A bombshell Cornell University study (arXiv:2606.04819) has exposed a glaring gap in Pearl, the blockchain that promised to turn crypto mining into real AI computation. Researcher Abhinaba Basu found that Pearl’s 320,000 GPUs—guzzling an estimated 112 megawatts—are doing nothing but random matrix multiplications. The protocol’s verification only checks if the math was done right, never whether it came from an actual AI model. Basu even built a miner that fed the network pure random numbers and still got rewarded. Meanwhile, budget GPU rental prices on vast.ai surged 38%, with utilization spiking from 57% to 94%, pushing legitimate AI researchers out of the market.

🔍 The study isn’t calling Pearl a scam—the team includes respected academics like Omri Weinstein (Hebrew University) and advisor Rafael Pass (Cornell Tech). But the design has a fatal flaw: the protocol can’t enforce “usefulness.” Pearl’s own white paper concedes it “attracts compute that does not necessarily have useful work.” The network’s 24 EH/s of hashrate is essentially a high-tech shell game—AI-shaped math with no AI inside.

⚠️ Risk note: Over 90% of PRL’s 2.1 billion total supply is still unmined. Early miner and insider holdings are undisclosed. Upbit delayed listing due to inconsistent circulation data. The token’s fully diluted value hovers around $1.6 billion, but its real utility remains unproven.
