How to work out strum patterns on guitar

How to work out strum patterns on guitar
The question I get asked more than anything is "what is the strum pattern to this song?". So here's a guide on how to begin figuring them out yourself.

Strums are generally divided into 8th note patterns and 16th note patterns. You can count them with DUDUDUDU and DUDUDUDUDUDUDUDU respectively, or as 1&2&3&4& and 1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a.

Once you start missing some of these beats out and leaving a space in the middle of the patterns, things begin to sound much more musical. The big trick is that you need to keep your arm moving even when you are missing a strum out.
