Kirsty MacColl CHIP SHOP ORIGINAL VERSION

33 years to the month that Kirsty MacColl achieved her first major chart success in Britain, and she did so with this rollicking and memorable hit; unfairly labelled a novelty, but emblematic of her ability to combine clever lyrics and catchy music with her own brand of pop. The song "There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis', here reduced to Chip Shop, was a Top 15 in England. This version, the original has a wonderfully rockabilly feel to it, despite her somewhat deadpan delivery with the clever word play. For many this is a signature tune from Kirsty, but i prefer her later works; showing more social commentary and exploration of different musical styles, but there is no denying the glorious pop feel to this 1981 hit.
