Brexit: UK government drops problem clauses from Internal Market Bill!

The UK is dropping the clauses in the UK Internal Market Bill that are designed to protect the UK's internal economic system.

In a statement today, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Michael Gove, has stated that, due to progress made in the Joint Committee regarding the Withdrawal Agreement, the UK government will now be withdrawing those Brussels baiting clauses from the Internal Market Bill.

And on top of that, similar clauses planned for the Taxation Bill, to be published tomorrow, will also be dropped.

The two co-chairs of the EU-UK Joint Committee, European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič and the UK Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, the Rt Hon Michael Gove, sorted out the remaining issues surrounding the operation of the Withdrawal Agreement in a meeting yesterday.

And in the joint statement they said:

"Following intensive and constructive work over the past weeks by the EU and the UK, the two co-chairs can now announce their agreement in principle on all issues, in particular with regard to the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland.

"An agreement in principle has been found in the following areas, amongst others: Border Control Posts/Entry Points specifically for checks on animals, plants and derived products, export declarations, the supply of medicines, the supply of chilled meats, and other food products to supermarkets, and a clarification on the application of State aid under the terms of the Protocol."

And it went on to say:

"In view of these mutually agreed solutions, the UK will withdraw clauses 44, 45 and 47 of the UK Internal Market Bill, and not introduce any similar provisions in the Taxation Bill."

Now, the Withdrawal Agreement is separate to the trade deal, except where it might supersede parts of it. And the Withdrawal Agreement would also be there in the event of a no-deal Brexit outcome.

What it appears has happened is that the outcome of the negotiations within the Joint Committee have made those clauses null and void.

At least the Lords can now vote the Internal Market Bill through.

But what it does signal, is that the Withdrawal Agreement is here to stay.

The UK will be bound by it after the 31st of December.

So any suspicions that the UK will take back full control over its territory by binning the Withdrawal Agreement appear to have been put to bed.

And Boris is off the Brussels soon for more talks.
