Two 'murder hornet' queens captured days after first nest destroyed in US
Washington State authorities captured two Asian giant hornet queens, known as "murder hornets," on Wednesday, four days after officials eradicated the first nest found in Blaine, just south of the Canadian border, on Oct. 24 by vacuuming them out of a hollowed-out tree trunk.
The footage, shared by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, shows the two queens held in vials after their discovery on October 28, when the tree containing their nest was taken down.
During eradication, a total of 98 worker hornets were removed, 85 of them vacuumed and a further 13 collected with a net the previous day. All 85 vacuumed hornets survived.
The Asian giant hornet can grow as large as 6.4 cm in length, and officials fear it could potentially pose a threat to humans and the beekeeping industry. It is the world's largest hornet and not native to the U.S.
