🎙️ North Korea Reform Radio, RAF VOLMET, KNLS Alaska! Great Shortwave DXing From Rural South Africa!

In this video, I show you some shortwave radio catches and a full bandscan recorded while visiting the tiny village of Rosendal in the Free State Province of South Africa. Nestled at the foot of the beautiful Witteberg Mountains, Rosendal is one of those rare places where the HF radio spectrum sounds wonderfully alive. With almost no man-made radio interference (RFI), there is a lot to hear on the HF bands.

Rosendal is a very small rural village known for its peaceful atmosphere, open landscapes, artistic community, and dramatic mountain scenery. For shortwave listeners and DXers, locations like this are great places to escape RF noise in cities. The quiet radio environment allowed for some very interesting reception and quite a few brand new catches.

For this DX expedition I used a Yaesu FT-840 connected to a 5-metre vertical ham radio antenna, as well as a Qodosen DX-286 paired with a 5-metre wire antenna.

There were many Chinese stations, as usual, but there were also several very many interesting and unusual catches from across the world, including:

📻 CNR11 in Tibetan from Hainan Island on 9480 kHz
📻 Voice of Wilderness from Tashkent on 9345 kHz
📻 Royal Air Force VOLMET on 5450 kHz USB
📻 Radio Inconfidência from Belo Horizonte, Brazil on 15190 kHz — a good daytime catch
📻 Voice of Korea in French on 9435, 13760 and 15245 kHz
📻 Radio Romania International on 15340 kHz
📻 Furusato no Kaze from New Taipei on 9685 kHz
📻 Furusato no Kaze from Paochung on 9705 kHz
📻 North Korea Reform Radio on 11560 kHz
📻 And many more stations from around the globe.

This band scan demonstrates just how exciting shortwave radio can still be in 2026, especially from quiet rural locations with low electrical noise.
