Big Red Feeds Her Three Chicks On An Overcast Afternoon At The Cornell Hawks Nest | May 11, 2026

Watch Big Red arrive at the nest to feed her chicks. After surveying the inventory of prey items, she selects a bird and parcels it out to her three hungry nestlings on an overcast afternoon in Ithaca, New York. During the meal, the youngest chick struggles to swallow one of the bigger pieces of prey that's offered despite its best efforts. One of the older chicks also pecks at its younger sibling, a common behavior that typically subsides once the chicks reach about two weeks of age.

A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University’s athletic fields since 2012. They have made use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012, 2015, and 2018–2023 they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. We installed cameras at both of these sites to get a better look at the intimate behavior of these well-known birds as they raise their young amid the bustle of a busy campus.
