On a research trip to Italy, I became obsessed with finding historic example of the rare art born in the late 1500's. Running from church to church, I found inlaid alters, large wall pieces, doorways, columns, ceilings all lined with various forms of scagliola.
Scagliola uses natural materials of gypsum powder, lime and raw pigments and is created through a careful manipulation of densities, color gradients, carved inlay and molding. Scagliola had almost become a lost art due to the ebb and flow of trends and tastes of society around the turn of the 20th century, I am happy to be one of the artists who are continuing and expanding this process.
Music:
Composter Isabella Leonarda 'Sonata duodecima' 1683
Contemporary duo Ratatat "Drugs" 2010
