WSP's Ajith Kumar on Sanitation in India

Water and Sanitation Program specialist Ajith Kumar describes the status of rural sanitation in India and Water and Sanitation Program's support to the Government. He highlights two major sanitation sector challenges. The first is usage, which is a huge behavior change and is difficult to sustain over the long term. The other big challenge is bringing sanitation practices to areas where societies and institutions are more fragmented. Kumar notes that getting best practices from different places in the world have helped, including learning from CLTS practices in Bangladesh and sanitation marketing experiences in Africa and Latin America. As Kumar describes, this exchange of ideas and innovations over the past 10 years has helped increase the open defecation free status of rural villages in India.
