Episode 19 - Rejoice Acorn & Maximus Thaler On Communal Living
The Federation of Egalitarian Communities (or FEC) is a network of intentional, income sharing communities in the United States. Through this kind of communal living, each FEC site seeks to meet the needs of all of its members. In exchange, communards, as these members are called, agree to commit a set number of labor hours to their community and abide by other rules of conduct.
One example of an FEC intentional community is Twin Oaks, located in rural Virginia. Twin Oaks has existed since 1967 and is presently comprised of over 90 communards.
Here to discuss communal living with us is Rejoice Acorn and Maximus Thaler. Rejoice lives in the FEC's Acorn Community, and Maximus lives on a site called Eastbrook Farm. Maximus, by the way, is our first recurring guest on Pineal Express; you can listen to his earlier appearance in Episode 1.
It's important to note that Rejoice and Maximus are not here to speak on behalf of the FEC as a whole, but they do have valuable insights from their own personal experiences living in FEC communities that help inform our understanding of what communal living can be like.
As one might expect, the agricultural setting from which Rejoice and Maximus Skyped with us is in close proximity to motors, passing vehicles, and roosters, so you will hear those corresponding background sounds intermittently throughout this episode.
